Prenatal Exposure to Wildfire PM2.5 and Risk of ASD and ADHD in Children Enrolled in Medicaid

CEED Members Stefania Papatheodorou, MD, PhD and Antonella Zanobetti, PhD led this week’s publication in the JAMA Pediatrics Journal (JAMA Network)

Is prenatal exposure to wildfire-related fine particulate matter (PM2.5) associated with risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children?

In this population-based cohort study of 893 212 mother-child pairs enrolled in US Medicaid, higher prenatal wildfire PM2.5 exposure was associated with an increase in ASD risk, whereas no meaningful association was observed for ADHD; associations for ASD were strongest with exposure to PM2.5 during midpregnancy to late pregnancy.
